Tutoring creatures directly onto the battlefield at instant speed by advancing verse counters creates one of the most deterministic and adaptable strategies in Commander. On Moxfield’s competitive and high-power charts, few Mono-Green () legends boast as much tactical precision and historical pedigree as Yisan, the Wanderer Bard.
As a Human Rogue legend costing three mana (), Yisan features an activated ability (, ): put a verse counter on Yisan, then search your library for a creature card with mana value equal to the number of verse counters on Yisan, put it onto the battlefield, and shuffle. By leveraging untapers like Quirion Ranger and board controllers like Seedborn Muse, Yisan constructs an inescapable chain of creature threats that adapts to any board state and finishes with lethal combat overruns.
Here is the strategic operational blueprint of Moxfield’s premier Yisan list, detailing how to pilot the iconic verse chain into instant-speed creature dominance.
1. Core Mechanics & Strategic Phases
Succeeding with Yisan requires a deck structure dense with untap creatures, stax elements, fast mana dorks, and game-ending overrun payoffs.
-
Early Game (Turns 1–2): Cast Turn 1 mana dorks like Llanowar Elves or Birds of Paradise to get Yisan onto the field on Turn 2.
-
Mid Game (Turns 3–4): Activate Yisan to fetch Verse 1 (Quirion Ranger) and Verse 2 (Scryb Ranger or Priest of Titania), untapping Yisan repeatedly to advance the chain rapidly.
-
Late Game (Turns 5+): Tutor Verse 5 (Seedborn Muse) to activate Yisan on every opponent’s turn, assembling infinite mana loops with Temur Sabertooth or fetching Craterhoof Behemoth to flatten the table.
2. Moxfield Highlights: The Bard’s Verse Chain
The highest-rated community lists on Moxfield optimize Yisan by structuring the creature curve into a seamless toolbox that answers threats while advancing toward victory.
Quirion Ranger / Scryb Ranger
The essential Verse 1 and 2 untap engines. Returning a Forest to your hand allows you to untap Yisan immediately, enabling multiple verse activations per turn cycle and doubling the speed of your toolbox progression.
Seedborn Muse
The ultimate Verse 5 target. Untapping all lands and permanents during each player’s untap step allows you to activate Yisan on every opponent’s turn, advancing from Verse 6 to Verse 8 across a single turn round.
Temur Sabertooth
The Verse 4 infinite catalyst. Sabertooth bounces high-mana creatures like Dockside Extortionist or mana-producing dorks back to your hand, generating infinite mana and infinite ETB triggers when paired with untapers.
Sylvan Safekeeper / Collector Ouphe
Continuous protection and stax disruption. Safekeeper provides instant-speed Shroud to protect Yisan from removal, while Collector Ouphe shuts down fast artifact mana strategies across the table.
