Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek introduces an impressive fleet of Spacecraft for Commander, from famous Federation starships to the Borg Cube and powerful experimental vessels. With the complete card gallery revealed, it is now possible to compare these ships using their actual abilities, mana costs, and station requirements rather than relying on incomplete previews.

Some Spacecraft are excellent because they generate value before becoming creatures. Others provide a powerful combat payoff, protect important permanents, or transform a developed artifact battlefield into a winning position. The difference matters enormously in Commander, where spending several turns preparing one ship can be costly.

Our top three MTG Star Trek Spacecraft for Commander are U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class, U.S.S. Discovery, at Black Alert, and Type-03 Borg Vessel. Each offers a different kind of value, from extra card access to discover triggers and artifact-based token production.

Here are the ten Star Trek Spacecraft we would most seriously consider for Commander, along with their verified station thresholds, ideal deck archetypes, and strongest supporting cards.

Updated November 1, 2026: Rankings revised using the complete card reveal and official release notes. This is an early Commander evaluation, not a ranking based on post-release tournament results.

Best MTG Star Trek Spacecraft at a Glance

Rank Spacecraft Mana Cost Station Best Role
1 U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class 7+ Card advantage
2 U.S.S. Discovery, at Black Alert 6+ Discover engine
3 Type-03 Borg Vessel 7+ Artifact cost reduction and tokens
4 U.S.S. Enterprise-A, Free Spirit 6+ Officer tokens
5 U.S.S. Defiant, Mirror Migrant 8+ Protection and phasing
6 Borg Cube 12+ Assimilation and artifacts
7 U.S.S. Reliant, From Hell’s Heart 10+ Creature recursion
8 U.S.S. Prometheus, Prototype 4+ / 8+ Multiplayer damage
9 U.S.S. Defiant, Tough Little Ship 5+ Artifact and enchantment removal
10 Deep Space 9 9+ Free permanents and anthem

This ranking considers power across different Commander strategies, not how iconic a particular ship is within Star Trek.

A ship ranked lower can easily be the better choice in a deck specifically designed to exploit its abilities. For example, Borg Cube is far more appealing in a dedicated artifact creature deck than in an ordinary midrange build.

How Do Spacecraft and Station Work in MTG?

Spacecraft are artifacts that use the station mechanic to unlock additional abilities as they accumulate charge counters.

Most begin as noncreature artifacts. They become artifact creatures only when they have enough charge counters to reach their indicated station threshold.

To activate station, tap another untapped creature you control and put charge counters equal to that creature’s power onto the Spacecraft. This can be done only as a sorcery, meaning during your main phase while the stack is empty.

A 4/4 creature, for example, can place four charge counters onto a Spacecraft in a single station activation. Two creatures with three power each could together supply six counters through separate activations.

Creatures that entered the battlefield this turn can be used for station, provided they are untapped. Station does not use the creature’s own tap ability, so summoning sickness does not prevent it from paying this cost.

There are several practical consequences for Commander:

  • Station normally requires creatures, not mana.
  • Larger creatures can reach station thresholds much faster.
  • Proliferate can add charge counters once a Spacecraft already has counters.
  • Charge counters remain on the artifact even if it stops being a creature.
  • Not every Spacecraft becomes a creature; some unlock other benefits instead.

Station also does not inherently prevent a Spacecraft from being affected by artifact removal. An unstated or unprotected ship can be destroyed before it ever becomes a creature.

If a Spacecraft has multiple thresholds, the abilities associated with each threshold function as long as the ship has enough charge counters.

For further explanations of Star Trek’s mechanics, see our MTG Star Trek Mechanics Explained guide.

1. U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class – Best Overall Spacecraft

Mana Cost:

Station: 7+ counters

Creature Form: 4/5 with flying and vigilance

U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class takes the top position because it provides useful card advantage for just three mana without requiring a specific color identity.

Whenever one or more charge counters are placed on the Enterprise-D for the first time each turn, you exile the top card of your library and may play it that turn.

That means ordinary station activations can immediately provide additional card access. You do not need to finish stationing the ship before its main value engine begins working.

The first-time-each-turn restriction matters. Putting several counters on Enterprise-D during one turn does not repeatedly trigger the same ability. However, adding counters on an opponent’s turn can produce another trigger if you have an appropriate instant-speed method.

Once the ship reaches seven counters, it becomes a 4/5 flying, vigilant artifact creature.

Best Commander Synergies

Coretapper is a useful support card because it can place charge counters onto artifacts. Thrummingbird and Evolution Sage provide ways to proliferate.

Power Conduit is another possible addition, especially in decks built around manipulating different kinds of counters.

The key limitation is that the exiled card can be played only during the specified turn. You must still pay its costs and obey normal timing rules.

A land revealed on an opponent’s turn, for example, normally cannot be played at that time.

Best for: Artifact value, proliferate, historic permanents, and dedicated Spacecraft decks.

Verdict: The strongest combination of affordability, flexibility, and repeatable value among the Star Trek Spacecraft.

2. U.S.S. Discovery, at Black Alert – Best Discover Engine

Mana Cost:

Station: 6+ counters

Creature Form: 5/5 with flying

U.S.S. Discovery, at Black Alert remains one of Star Trek’s most powerful value-focused Spacecraft.

Whenever Discovery enters the battlefield or attacks, you discover 5. This allows you to reveal cards from the top of your library until you find an eligible nonland card with mana value five or less, then cast it for free or put it into your hand.

That is a substantial effect even if Discovery never reaches its station threshold.

Once it has six or more charge counters, the ship becomes a 5/5 flying artifact creature that can trigger discover again by attacking.

The six-counter requirement is manageable for green decks, which often have access to large creatures and strong creature development.

Best Commander Synergies

Panharmonicon can double the value of Discovery’s entrance trigger, while Conjurer’s Closet can repeatedly blink it for additional discover triggers.

Thassa, Deep-Dwelling provides another way to reuse the entrance ability in a deck with both blue and green.

Blinking the ship resets its charge counters, so there is a genuine decision between repeatedly discovering and building toward the creature form.

Discovery is less flexible than Enterprise-D because it requires green mana and costs more to cast. However, its immediate discover trigger can produce a much larger burst of value.

Best for: Green midrange, discover, blink, and large-creature strategies.

Verdict: The best ship when your priority is immediate, potentially high-impact card advantage.

3. Type-03 Borg Vessel – Best Artifact Engine

Mana Cost:

Station: 7+ counters

Creature Form: 5/5 with flying

Type-03 Borg Vessel is a major addition to our updated ranking because it supports artifact strategies even before becoming a creature.

Its static ability reduces the cost of artifact spells you cast by one generic mana.

That makes it useful in decks built around repeatedly casting artifacts, including mana rocks, utility pieces, and artifact creatures.

The ship becomes more impressive after reaching seven charge counters. At that point, it becomes a 5/5 flying creature and gains an ability that creates a 1/1 colorless Borg artifact creature token whenever you cast a spell.

This provides a natural way to grow your artifact creature army.

The generated tokens can also help station other Spacecraft, creating opportunities for a dedicated fleet-based strategy.

Best Commander Synergies

Foundry Inspector provides additional artifact cost reduction, while Sai, Master Thopterist rewards artifact spell casting with more flying tokens.

The Borg Queen can strengthen the artifact creature army, and Skullclamp turns expendable small creatures into card draw.

One important limitation is that the Borg-token ability is part of the ship’s seven-counter payoff. It does not function before the Vessel reaches that threshold.

Best for: Borg artifacts, artifact spells, token generation, and Spacecraft strategies.

Verdict: An efficient artifact support piece with a much higher ceiling once fully stationed.

4. U.S.S. Enterprise-A, Free Spirit – Best Token-Producing Ship

Mana Cost:

Station: 6+ counters

Creature Form: 5/5 with flying and lifelink

U.S.S. Enterprise-A, Free Spirit is an excellent example of a Spacecraft that contributes to its own station requirement.

When it enters the battlefield, it creates three 1/1 red Officer creature tokens.

Those tokens provide immediate blockers, potential attackers, and three power that can be used to station Spacecraft. Because creatures with summoning sickness can still pay station costs, you do not need to wait a turn to use newly created Officer tokens this way.

Enterprise-A also has ward , which makes targeted removal slightly more expensive.

Once stationed, it becomes a 5/5 flying lifelink creature capable of applying combat pressure while recovering life.

Best Commander Synergies

Anointed Procession can double the three Officer tokens into six. That provides enough total creature power to station Enterprise-A immediately, assuming those tokens remain untapped.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard rewards creating Officers and casting Spacecraft, while Skullclamp offers a way to use expendable tokens for additional cards.

The ship is not especially efficient as a pure combat threat, but its entrance ability gives you value even when opponents remove it.

Best for: Officer tokens, blink, white midrange, and creature-heavy Spacecraft builds.

Verdict: One of the most self-contained Spacecraft, with a useful entrance ability and a realistic station requirement.

5. U.S.S. Defiant, Mirror Migrant – Best Defensive Spacecraft

Mana Cost:

Station: 8+ counters

Creature Form: 5/5 with flying

U.S.S. Defiant, Mirror Migrant is a particularly interesting addition because it serves as a defensive trick rather than simply a large artifact waiting to become a creature.

It has flash, allowing you to cast it at instant speed.

When it enters the battlefield, the Defiant and up to one target creature you control phase out. They are treated as though they do not exist until they phase back in during your next untap step.

This can protect an important creature from removal or help preserve it through a dangerous board wipe.

Unlike blinking, phasing does not cause the creature to leave or re-enter the battlefield. That means existing counters, attachments, and most other persistent characteristics remain intact.

The ship’s eight-counter threshold is fairly demanding, but becoming a 5/5 flying creature is secondary to its immediate protective role.

Best Commander Synergies

Unwinding Clock is useful for supporting artifact activation engines, although it does not itself change the timing restrictions on station.

Artifact recursion from Emry, Lurker of the Loch can also help recover the Defiant after it eventually goes to the graveyard.

The main reason to play this Spacecraft is its ability to protect a valuable creature at an unexpected moment, not its later combat form.

Best for: Artifact value, defensive midrange, creature protection, and slower Spacecraft strategies.

Verdict: A surprisingly flexible two-mana ship with a defensive role that most other Spacecraft cannot replicate.

6. Borg Cube – Best Borg Finisher

Mana Cost:

Station: 12+ counters

Creature Form: 6/6; your artifact creatures gain flying

Borg Cube is one of the most thematic Spacecraft in the entire release.

Its printed cost is seven mana, but affinity for artifact creatures reduces the generic portion of that cost by one for each artifact creature you control.

That can make the Cube surprisingly affordable in a deck that produces large numbers of artifact tokens.

Whenever Borg Cube enters or attacks, it assimilates a creature card exiled with it if possible. Otherwise, it can exile up to one target creature.

Assimilating a card puts it onto the battlefield under your control with a +1/+1 counter. It becomes a Borg artifact creature and loses its other creature types.

This provides a flavorful mix of creature removal and battlefield development.

Once the Cube reaches twelve charge counters, it gives your artifact creatures flying. A large Borg army can then become extremely difficult to block.

Best Commander Synergies

The Borg Queen provides an anthem for artifact creatures, while Sai, Master Thopterist helps create additional artifact bodies.

Master of Etherium is another strong inclusion because it both rewards artifacts and increases the power of your creatures.

The biggest limitation is the requirement to control enough artifact creatures for both affinity and a meaningful flying payoff.

Best for: Borg typal, Esper artifacts, token armies, and artifact creature combat.

Verdict: An outstanding dedicated artifact payoff, though far less flexible than the top-ranked ships.

7. U.S.S. Reliant, From Hell’s Heart – Best Recursion Spacecraft

Mana Cost:

Station: 10+ counters

Creature Form: 4/3 with flying

U.S.S. Reliant, From Hell’s Heart provides creature recursion even before becoming an artifact creature.

Whenever the Reliant enters the battlefield or deals combat damage to a player, you return a target creature card with mana value four or less from your graveyard to the battlefield with a finality counter.

That makes its entrance ability attractive in decks containing creatures with powerful triggered abilities or utility effects.

The finality counter is an important limitation. If the returned creature would die, it is exiled instead, making ordinary sacrifice loops and repeated graveyard recursion more difficult.

The ship requires ten charge counters before it becomes a flying creature, so its combat-damage trigger can be relatively difficult to access.

Best Commander Synergies

Panharmonicon can increase the value of its entrance trigger.

Conjurer’s Closet and Teleportation Circle offer repeatable blink possibilities in decks that can use those effects.

A deck with several worthwhile targets already in the graveyard can get immediate value without needing to station the ship at all.

Best for: Reanimator, graveyard value, blink, and creature ETB strategies.

Verdict: A useful recursion tool, but the ten-counter threshold makes its eventual combat ability less dependable.

8. U.S.S. Prometheus, Prototype – Best Multiplayer Damage Ship

Mana Cost:

Station: 4+ and 8+ counters

Creature Form: 6/6 with flying at 4+

U.S.S. Prometheus, Prototype has two separate station thresholds.

At four charge counters, it becomes a 6/6 flying artifact creature. That is an achievable first requirement, especially in a deck with medium-sized creatures.

At eight counters, it gains Multivector Assault Mode. Whenever Prometheus deals combat damage to one opponent, it deals that much damage to each other opponent.

This creates a powerful multiplayer damage effect. One successful attack can pressure the entire table rather than a single opponent.

The additional damage dealt to the other opponents is not combat damage, so it does not retrigger the same ability or count as commander damage.

Best Commander Synergies

Tempered Steel can increase the ship’s power, while Master of Etherium rewards developing a larger artifact battlefield.

Whispersilk Cloak can help Prometheus connect with an opponent, though it may complicate later efforts to target the ship with other effects.

Its main weakness is that it needs to become a creature, reach the second threshold, and successfully deal combat damage before producing its full payoff.

Best for: Artifact combat, Spacecraft, charge counters, and multiplayer damage.

Verdict: One of the strongest ship-based finishers when your deck can reliably station it and create profitable attacks.

9. U.S.S. Defiant, Tough Little Ship – Best Artifact Removal Ship

Mana Cost:

Station: 5+ counters

Creature Form: 7/4 with flying and hexproof

U.S.S. Defiant, Tough Little Ship offers a conventional but useful effect when it enters the battlefield: destroy up to one target artifact or enchantment.

That can answer a problematic mana rock, Equipment, enchantment, or other utility permanent.

Unlike many Spacecraft with expensive station requirements, the Defiant needs only five charge counters before becoming a creature.

Once active, it becomes a 7/4 flying artifact creature with hexproof, which can represent meaningful combat pressure.

However, the six-mana cost is relatively high for an effect that destroys only one artifact or enchantment.

Best Commander Synergies

Teleportation Circle can reuse its entrance ability, while Academy Ruins provides another route to recover it after removal.

In a deck with substantial artifact cost reduction, six mana can become less of a burden.

The Defiant remains a reasonable option for thematic Spacecraft decks, but it faces strong competition from more efficient artifact and enchantment removal spells.

Best for: Historic value, artifact control, Spacecraft, and thematic Federation decks.

Verdict: A solid utility ship with a useful entrance effect, but no longer one of our top five overall picks.

10. Deep Space 9 – Best High-End Permanent Engine

Mana Cost:

Station: 9+ counters

Station Payoff: Creatures you control get +3/+3

Deep Space 9 is among the most spectacular artifacts in the set.

When it enters the battlefield and at the beginning of your upkeep, you exile the top four cards of your library and put all permanent cards exiled this way onto the battlefield.

In a deck with a high permanent count, that can generate an extraordinary amount of value.

Expensive creatures, artifacts, enchantments, and lands can enter without paying their mana costs, allowing you to develop a battlefield far beyond what your normal mana production would support.

Deep Space 9 also has station, but it works differently from most Spacecraft.

At nine or more charge counters, it gives your creatures +3/+3. It does not become an artifact creature itself.

That makes Deep Space 9 a value engine and anthem rather than a flying attacker.

Best Commander Synergies

Master Transmuter can put Deep Space 9 directly onto the battlefield, avoiding its enormous normal mana cost.

Goblin Welder and Daretti, Scrap Savant provide alternative artifact-recursion strategies, while Sensei’s Divining Top can improve the top of your library.

The biggest drawback remains its nine-mana cost, especially in decks that cannot accelerate or cheat large artifacts onto the battlefield.

It also becomes less effective when your deck includes too many instants and sorceries, because those cards cannot enter the battlefield through its ability.

Best for: Big mana, permanent-heavy decks, artifact reanimator, and battlecruiser Commander.

Verdict: One of the set’s most explosive late-game artifacts, but too expensive and specialized to rank among the most broadly useful Spacecraft.

Other Star Trek Spacecraft Worth Considering

The completed gallery also reveals several additional Spacecraft that narrowly missed our top ten.

U.S.S. Enterprise-C, Time-Tossed offers a hand-refresh ability when it enters or dies. It becomes a 6/6 flying creature at just three charge counters, making it an appealing choice for decks that frequently empty their hands.

Romulan Bird-of-Prey costs only and has hexproof while it remains a noncreature artifact. It gains two charge counters whenever you cast a noncreature spell, allowing it to reach its eight-counter threshold without relying entirely on station activations.

D-7 Battle Cruiser remains a useful low-cost option for Klingon and Warrior decks. Its three-counter threshold generates temporary attacking creatures, while its eight-counter threshold unlocks flying.

These ships may be more useful than higher-ranked cards in strategies specifically designed around their mechanics.

Best Commander Cards for Station and Charge Counters

A dedicated Spacecraft deck needs more than powerful ships. It also needs ways to generate charge counters efficiently and enough creatures to activate station without falling behind.

Card Main Benefit
Coretapper Adds charge counters directly to artifacts
Power Conduit Places charge counters on artifacts
Thrummingbird Proliferates after combat damage
Evolution Sage Proliferates when lands enter
Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus Increases proliferate output
Deepglow Skate Doubles existing counters on selected permanents
Sai, Master Thopterist Produces flying creatures that can station ships
Shorikai, Genesis Engine Creates Pilot tokens and provides card selection

Proliferate is one of the strongest tools available because it can increase charge counters already present on several Spacecraft at once.

However, proliferate cannot place the first counter onto a permanent that does not have one. You must begin stationing the ship or use another method to add the initial charge counter.

Creature tokens are also important. A 1/1 token can add one charge counter to a Spacecraft, while a creature with six power can add six counters in one activation.

The best strategy is usually to combine a productive creature base with additional charge-counter support instead of relying entirely on one method.

Which Star Trek Commander Precon Is Best for Spacecraft?

All four Star Trek preconstructed decks offer artifact or creature strategies, but Federation Fleet remains our preferred starting point for a dedicated Spacecraft build.

Jean-Luc Picard, Luminary can add charge counters to a Spacecraft when you draw your second card each turn. That helps operate ships while advancing the deck’s historic-permanent strategy.

Landing Party offers green ramp, creature development, and Captain Kirk, Boldly Going as an alternative commander for a more ship-focused build.

We Are the Borg naturally supports artifact creatures and can take advantage of both Borg Cube and Type-03 Borg Vessel.

Klingon Fury has fewer dedicated Spacecraft synergies, but aggressive ships can still contribute to its combat strategy.

If you already own Federation Fleet, explore our Federation Fleet Upgrade Guide: Best Jean-Luc Picard Upgrades for more ways to improve its artifact and historic synergies.

Should You Build a Dedicated Spacecraft Commander Deck?

A dedicated Spacecraft Commander deck can be effective, but it should not simply contain every ship available.

Several Spacecraft require a substantial investment of creature power before they become meaningful threats. If your deck contains too many expensive ships and too few creatures, you may spend several turns developing artifacts without enough board presence to defend yourself.

Start with Spacecraft that provide value even before being fully stationed.

U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class generates additional card access as counters are placed on it. U.S.S. Discovery, at Black Alert provides discover 5 immediately, while Type-03 Borg Vessel reduces artifact costs.

Then choose a smaller number of finishers capable of converting your developed board into a win.

Borg Cube can give an artifact creature army flying, while U.S.S. Prometheus, Prototype can deal damage across several opponents.

Finally, include enough removal, ramp, and card draw to function when your key ship is destroyed.

The strongest Spacecraft decks are still fundamentally strong Commander decks. The ships should reinforce the strategy, not replace the basic resources needed to play the game.

Final Verdict: The Best MTG Star Trek Spacecraft for Commander

With the complete Star Trek gallery revealed, the strongest Spacecraft are easier to identify.

U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class is our top overall pick because it costs only three mana, fits virtually any Commander color identity, and generates card access whenever its charge-counter ability triggers.

U.S.S. Discovery, at Black Alert remains one of the best value engines thanks to discover 5, while Type-03 Borg Vessel is an excellent artifact support card that can become a substantial token engine.

For players who want immediate creatures, U.S.S. Enterprise-A, Free Spirit creates its own crew. U.S.S. Defiant, Mirror Migrant offers a different benefit entirely, protecting an important creature at instant speed.

More specialized decks can extract enormous value from Borg Cube, U.S.S. Reliant, From Hell’s Heart, or Deep Space 9.

Actual Commander performance will depend on surrounding cards, power level, and how consistently each deck can station its ships.

Our central recommendation is simple: Prioritize Spacecraft that do something useful before becoming creatures, then choose your finishers according to the strategy your deck already supports.

Star Trek’s starships have plenty of potential, but successful Commander decks still need good engines, reliable interaction, and a crew capable of getting those ships off the ground.
