Converting opponent extra card draws into an overwhelming army of 1/1 Snake tokens while refuelingly hand sizes creates a chaotic Temur wheel engine. On Moxfield’s high-power and Synergy charts, Xyris, the Writhing Storm stands as one of the most explosive commanders in the Temur () color identity.
As a 3/5 Snake Leviathan legend costing five mana (), Xyris features Flying and Haste. Whenever an opponent draws a card outside their first card in their draw step, Xyris creates a 1/1 green Snake creature token. Furthermore, when Xyris deals combat damage to a player, both you and that player draw cards equal to the damage dealt. By chaining massive wheel effects like Windfall and Wheel of Fortune, Xyris generates 20+ Snake tokens in a single turn, triggering lethal enter-the-battlefield burn damage with Purphoros, God of the Forge.
Here is the strategic operational blueprint of Moxfield’s premier Xyris list, detailing how to turn wheel spells into instant token swarms and table-wide burn victories.
1. Core Mechanics & Strategic Phases
Succeeding with Xyris requires low-cost ramp acceleration, wheel spells, ETB burn pingers, and combat token pumps in Temur colors.
-
Early Game (Turns 1–2): Ramp aggressively using Birds of Paradise, Three Visits, and continuous token or mana pieces like Lotus Cobra or Impact Tremors.
-
Mid Game (Turns 3–4): Deploy Xyris () thanks to her haste, attack an open opponent to draw 3 cards and generate 3 Snakes immediately.
-
Late Game (Turns 5+): Cast a wheel spell like Windfall or Wheel of Misfortune to spawn 20+ Snake tokens at once, melting all three opponents simultaneously with Purphoros, God of the Forge or overrun buffs like Shared Animosity.
2. Moxfield Highlights: Temur Wheel Machinery
The highest-rated community lists on Moxfield optimize Xyris by coupling forced multi-player draw spells with token multiplication and instant burn damage.
Windfall / Wheel of Fortune
The core token engines. Forcing all three opponents to draw 7 new cards triggers Xyris 21 times, instantly creating 21 Snake tokens while digging for more gas in your hand.
Purphoros, God of the Forge / Impact Tremors
ETB burn finishers. Dealing 1 or 2 damage to every opponent whenever a creature enters under your control means a single 21-Snake wheel spell deals 42+ damage to the entire table instantly.
Earthcraft / Cryptolith Rite
Snake mana production. Tapping newly created Snake tokens for basic mana allows you to chain multiple wheels and spells back-to-back within the exact same turn cycle.
Shared Animosity / Beastmaster Ascension
Combat win conditions. Giving your swarm of Snakes +X/+0 for each other attacking Snake converts 1/1 tokens into lethal 20/1 attackers in a single combat phase.
