Turning combat damage from Dwarf creatures into explosive Treasure creation makes Thorin, Company’s Leader from The Hobbit Commander (HOC) one of the most explosive Mono-Red aggressive commanders in Magic: The Gathering.
As a 4/5 Dwarf Warrior costing five mana (), Thorin generates two Treasure tokens whenever a Dwarf you control deals combat damage to a player or a battle. Furthermore, Thorin possesses a massive activated ability that grants all creatures you control Double Strike until end of turn. By connecting with multiple low-cost Dwarves, Thorin builds a mountain of Treasure tokens within a single combat step, effortlessly generating the ten mana required to activate his board-wide Double Strike ability and wipe out opponent life totals.
Here is the strategic operational blueprint of Moxfield’s premier Thorin, Company’s Leader list, detailing how to swarm with low-cost Dwarves, stack massive Treasure hoards, and resolve game-ending Double Strike combat waves.
1. Core Mechanics & Strategic Phases
Succeeding with Thorin requires aggressive low-cost Dwarves, red haste enablers, Treasure amplification engines, and high-impact artifact payoffs.
-
Early Game (Turns 1–3): Deploy efficient Dwarf creatures like Seven Dwarves, Magda, Brazen Outlaw, and fast red mana acceleration like Sol Ring or Ruby Medallion.
-
Mid Game (Turns 4–5): Cast Thorin, Company’s Leader. Swing with your Dwarf army into players or battles to trigger two Treasure tokens per connecting Dwarf, multiplying your available mana exponentially.
-
Late Game (Turns 5+): Leverage your hoarded Treasures to activate Thorin’s ability, granting your entire board Double Strike, or sacrifice Treasures via Magda, Brazen Outlaw to fetch high-impact Dragons and Artifacts.
2. Moxfield Highlights: Dwarf Swarm & Treasure Amplifiers
The highest-rated community lists on Moxfield optimize Thorin by leveraging red’s premier Dwarf tribal infrastructure and aggressive token damage scaling.
Magda, Brazen Outlaw / Professional Face-Breaker
The core Dwarf and Treasure synergies. Magda taps your Dwarves to create Treasures and tutors artifacts straight to the battlefield, while Professional Face-Breaker converts your combat damage into impulse card draw.
Xorn / Goldspan Dragon
Treasure multipliers. Xorn adds an extra Treasure to every Thorin trigger (giving you three per hit), while Goldspan Dragon doubles the mana value of every single Treasure sacrificed.
Hellkite Tyrant / Reckless Fireweaver
Alternate win conditions. Reckless Fireweaver drains enemy tables every time Thorin creates Treasures, while Hellkite Tyrant steals opposing artifacts and wins the match outright if you hold twenty or more Treasures.
Deflecting Swat / Tibalt’s Trickery / Chaos Warp
Mono-Red interaction suite. Protects Thorin from targeted removal while disrupting key opponent combo pieces.
