Converting wide creature attacks into massive Clue token generation turns straightforward Boros combat aggression into sustained card draw and explosive artifact synergy. On Moxfield’s high-power charts, Sophina, Spearsage Deserter (originally printed in Secret Lair x Stranger Things and Universes Within) stands as a formidable Boros () commander for attack-triggered value, artifact burn, and Friends Forever partner flexibility.
As a 4/4 Human Soldier legend with menace costing four mana (), Sophina features a powerful combat-triggered ability: whenever Sophina, Spearsage Deserter attacks, you investigate once for each nontoken attacking creature you control. Armed with low-cost nontoken creatures and artifact-payoff engines, Sophina rapidly swamps the board with Clue tokens that fuel affinity spells, ping opponents directly via card-entry triggers, and draw massive amounts of fresh cards.
Here is the strategic operational blueprint of Moxfield’s premier Sophina list, detailing how to swarm with efficient creatures, maximize Clue generation, and convert tokens into lethal board advantages.
1. Core Mechanics & Strategic Phases
Succeeding with Sophina requires low-mana nontoken attackers, artifact-synergy burn engines, cost reducers, and fast Naya/Boros mana dorks and rocks.
-
Early Game (Turns 1–3): Deploy fast nontoken creatures like Esper Sentinel, Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, and Loran of the Third Path alongside fast mana rocks.
-
Mid Game (Turn 4): Cast Sophina () and swing with your team. Generating 3 to 5 Clue tokens per attack phase immediately triggers pingers like Reckless Fireweaver and Ingenious Artillerist.
-
Late Game (Turns 5+): Weaponize your pile of Clue tokens using Nettlecyst for massive commander damage or tap them for mana with Inspiring Statuary to cast game-ending spells like Hellkite Tyrant.
2. Moxfield Highlights: Boros Clue & Artifact Synergies
The highest-rated community lists on Moxfield optimize Sophina by running low-cost aggressive creatures alongside damage pingers that capitalize on Clues entering and leaving the battlefield.
Reckless Fireweaver / Ingenious Artillerist
Artifact pingers. Whenever Sophina generates Clues during combat, these creatures deal direct damage to every opponent for each artifact entering the battlefield.
Academy Manufactor
Token tripler. When Sophina investigates, Academy Manufactor creates a Treasure token, a Food token, and a Clue token instead, multiplying your mana, life, and card draw output immensely.
Inspiring Statuary / Nettlecyst
Artifact utility & beatdown. Inspiring Statuary gives non-artifact spells improvise (allowing Clues to act as colorless mana rocks), while Nettlecyst turns Sophina into a single-swing lethal threat.
Professional Face-Breaker / Loyal Apprentice
Combat & treasure engines. Providing additional token output and card impulse drawing when combat damage connects.
