When it comes to versatility and strategic adaptability, few commanders can match the raw potential of Sisay, Weatherlight Captain. Holding a premium spot on Moxfield’s public deck building charts, Sisay is the ultimate manifestation of a „Toolbox“ commander, capable of tutoring any legendary permanent from your library directly onto the battlefield at instant speed.
Although Sisay costs only White mana to cast, her activated ability requires all five colors (White, Blue, Black, Red, Green). She gets +1/+1 for each color among other legendary permanents you control, and you can pay WUBRG to search your library for a legendary permanent with a mana value less than Sisay’s power and put it straight onto the battlefield. This allows you to respond to your opponents‘ actions during their own turns, pulling out the exact legendary countermeasure you need.
Here is the operational breakdown of Moxfield’s top-rated Sisay build, focusing on color optimization, high-tier legendary synergies, and establishing absolute control over the table.
1. Core Mechanics & Operational Phases
The fundamental goal of a Sisay deck is to increase her power rapidly so her tutoring ability can access high-cost, game-ending legendary permanents.
-
Early Game (Turns 1–3): Much like other five-color engines, your opening priority is mana fixing and ramp. You must secure access to all five colors using low-cost mana rocks and untapped dual lands. Cast Sisay early so she is ready to activate the moment your mana engine is fully operational.
-
Mid Game (Turns 4–5): Deploy cheap, multi-colored legendary permanents. Every distinct color added to your board pumps Sisay’s power metrics, unlocking her ability to tutor for more expensive assets. Begin using her ability at the end of your opponents‘ turns to save your mana resources.
-
Late Game (Turns 6+): Execute your silver-bullet strategy. Tutor up legendary heavy-hitters that lock down opponents‘ options, protect your board state, or combine into an immediate combat victory.
2. Moxfield Highlights: The Legendary All-Stars
The most popular community lists on Moxfield optimize Sisay by running legendary permanents that instantly warp the game state the moment they are tutored onto the field.
Jodah, the Unifier
An absolute powerhouse in this build. When tutored out, Jodah provides a massive stat boost to all your legendary creatures based on the number of legends you control. Furthermore, he adds a cascade-like mechanic to every legendary spell you cast from your hand, triggering rapid chain reactions across your entire board.
Carth the Lion
The ultimate utility enabler if you lean into the Planeswalker toolkit. Carth reduces the cost of your planeswalkers‘ loyalty upgrades and alters their activation metrics, allowing them to reach their ultimate abilities much faster. Additionally, his Golgari color identity gives Sisay an immediate +2/+2 boost.
Raffine, Scheming Seer
An exceptional inclusion for both color identity and card filtering. Raffine contributes three distinct colors (White, Blue, Black) to Sisay’s power scaling for just three mana. Her Connive mechanic allows you to filter your hand and grow your attackers during the combat phase.
Derevi, Empyrial Tactician
A vital operational utility piece. Whenever your creatures deal combat damage to a player, Derevi triggers to untap your permanents. This allows you to untap your five-color mana sources right after the combat step, giving you enough resources to activate Sisay’s tutor ability an additional time before your turn ends.
