Cheating massive high-cost artifacts directly into play while bypassing counterspells and mana restrictions provides unmatched velocity in Izzet color identities. On Moxfield’s competitive and high-power charts, few artifact-centric legends scale as exponentially fast as Jhoira, Ageless Innovator.
As an Izzet () commander costing just two mana (), Jhoira utilizes her activated ability to add two Ingenuity counters to herself, then put an artifact card with mana value less than or equal to the number of Ingenuity counters on her from your hand directly onto the battlefield. Because this is an activated ability rather than a spell cast, it slips past conventional counter-magic. By pairing Jhoira with continuous untap mechanics, you can accumulate six to eight counters in a single turn cycle, dumping game-ending artifacts like Portal to Phyrexia or Blightsteel Colossus onto the board before opponents assemble defenses.
Here is the strategic operational blueprint of Moxfield’s premier Jhoira list, detailing how to turn rapid untap triggers into massive artifact dominance.
1. Core Mechanics & Strategic Phases
Succeeding with Jhoira requires a deck structure dense with artifact untap enablers, heavy artifact threats, and blue protection spells.
-
Early Game (Turns 1–2): Cast Jhoira, Ageless Innovator as early as Turn 1 or 2 using fast mana options like Sol Ring or Mox Opal. Immediately tap her to put two Ingenuity counters on her and drop a utility artifact.
-
Mid Game (Turns 3–4): Deploy continuous untapers like Manifold Key, Voltaic Key, or Unwinding Clock. Activate Jhoira multiple times per turn cycle to ramp her counters up to four, six, or eight.
-
Late Game (Turns 5+): Drop massive high-mana payloads like Portal to Phyrexia or assemble infinite mana/untap loops via Isochron Scepter and Dramatic Reversal to overwhelm the table.
2. Moxfield Highlights: The Innovator’s Workshop
The highest-rated community lists on Moxfield optimize Jhoira by pairing her counter-acceleration with untap artifacts, high-impact payloads, and counter-magic defense.
Unwinding Clock / Manifold Key
The essential untap engine. Unwinding Clock untaps all of your artifacts during every single opponent’s untap step. Paired with Jhoira, you add two counters and drop a free artifact on each player’s turn, accumulating eight Ingenuity counters before your next upkeep even begins.
Portal to Phyrexia / Blightsteel Colossus
The heavy-hitting payoffs. Paying nine mana () for Portal to Phyrexia is a steep cost, but putting it into play for zero mana off Jhoira’s activation destroys enemy board states immediately while reanimating creature threats from opposing graveyards.
Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal
The infinite untap combo. Imprinting Dramatic Reversal onto Isochron Scepter alongside non-land mana sources creates infinite untaps and infinite mana. This allows Jhoira to gain infinite Ingenuity counters and put every single artifact from your hand directly into play at instant speed.
Fierce Guardianship / Deflecting Swat
Free protection density. Because Jhoira costs only two mana () and enters play on the earliest turns of the game, keeping free interaction active ensures Jhoira remains on the battlefield to hold her accumulated counters.
