Weaponizing -1/-1 counters to assemble an unstoppable deathtouch token swarm makes Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons from Amonkhet one of the most lethal Golgari commanders in Magic: The Gathering.
Costing just two mana (), Hapatra’s core trigger generates a 1/1 green Snake creature token with deathtouch whenever you place one or more -1/-1 counters on any creature. Combined with mass counter distributors like Yawgmoth, Thran Physician or infinite recursion engines like Blowfly Infestation, Hapatra converts creature debuffs into infinite sacrifice loops, card draw, and immediate board wipes.
Here is the strategic operational blueprint of Moxfield’s premier Hapatra list, detailing how to place -1/-1 counters, trigger infinite token loops, and drain enemy life totals in a single turn.
1. Core Mechanics & Strategic Phases
Succeeding with Hapatra requires rapid -1/-1 counter generators, sacrifice payoffs, low-cost Golgari tutors, and instant aristocrat pings.
-
Early Game (Turns 1–2): Cast Hapatra on turn two. Attack open opponents to land combat damage and distribute -1/-1 counters.
-
Mid Game (Turns 3–4): Deploy counter engines like Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Devoted Druid, or Nest of Scarabs to flood the board with deathtouch Snake tokens while clearing opponent creatures.
-
Late Game (Turns 4+): Establish infinite loops with Blowfly Infestation or Carnifex Demon. Pair token sacrifices with aristocrat drainers like Blood Artist or Zulaport Cutthroat to drain the entire pod instantly.
2. Moxfield Highlights: Counter Engines & Infinite Loops
The highest-rated community lists on Moxfield optimize Hapatra by packing efficient -1/-1 counter generators that convert creature deaths into infinite Snake tokens.
Blowfly Infestation / Nest of Scarabs
The core infinite loop enabler. When a creature with a -1/-1 counter dies, Blowfly Infestation moves a counter onto another creature, triggering Hapatra to spawn a new Snake token, which can then be target-debuffed to loop infinitely.
Yawgmoth, Thran Physician
The premier engine piece. Sacrificing a Snake token to Yawgmoth places a -1/-1 counter on an opponent’s creature, draws a card, and immediately triggers Hapatra to create a replacement Snake.
Devoted Druid / Quillspike
Infinite mana and counter combo. Placing -1/-1 counters on Devoted Druid untaps it while spawning Hapatra tokens, providing endless mana and sacrifice fodder.
Blood Artist / Zulaport Cutthroat / Bastion of Remembrance
Aristocrat drain suite. Converts infinite Snake token sacrifice loops into instant table-wide lethal damage.
