Turning self-mill into an unassailable second hand in exile makes Grolnok, the Omnivore from Innistrad: Crimson Vow one of the most explosive Simic commanders in Magic: The Gathering.
As a 3/3 Frog legend costing four mana (), Grolnok triggers whenever a Frog you control attacks, milling three cards. His true power lies in his passive ability: whenever a permanent card is put into your graveyard from your library, it is exiled with a croak counter. You may then play lands and cast spells directly from among cards in exile with croak counters on them. By combining self-mill engines with Frog synergies and instant-speed top-deck filters, Grolnok effectively puts your library into exile to resolve swift game-ending combos.
Here is the strategic operational blueprint of Moxfield’s premier Grolnok list, detailing how to execute mass self-mill, bypass traditional graveyard hate, and resolve fast win conditions.
1. Core Mechanics & Strategic Phases
Succeeding with Grolnok requires targeted self-mill engines, low-cost Frog attackers, fast Simic mana ramp, and immediate win payoffs.
-
Early Game (Turns 1–2): Ramp using fast mana dorks like Birds of Paradise and low-drop Frog support like Jade Avenger or Spore Frog.
-
Mid Game (Turns 3–4): Cast Grolnok. Attack with Frogs or activate self-mill engines like Hermit Druid or Hedron Crab to exile key permanents with croak counters.
-
Late Game (Turns 4+): Exile the majority of your library using mass self-mill spells like Traumatize or infinite self-mill engines. Cast Thassa’s Oracle or Laboratory Maniac directly from exile with croak counters for the win.
2. Moxfield Highlights: Self-Mill Engines & Exile Payoffs
The highest-rated community lists on Moxfield optimize Grolnok by prioritizing permanent-dense cards and high-velocity self-mill triggers that build massive croak-counter exile zones.
Hermit Druid / Hedron Crab / Altar of Dementia
High-speed self-mill generators. Hermit Druid mills continuous cards until hitting a basic land, instantly dumping handfuls of permanent cards straight into exile with croak counters.
Thassa’s Oracle / Laboratory Maniac
The primary win condition package. Once Grolnok’s triggers move your entire library into exile with croak counters, casting either of these creatures directly from exile guarantees victory.
Spore Frog / Froghemoth / Plaxcaster Frogling
Frog tribal enablers. Spore Frog provides repeat fog protection while triggering Grolnok’s attack-mill ability to exile cards early in the match.
Fierce Guardianship / Force of Will / Heroic Intervention
Protection suite. Shields Grolnok from targeted removal and board wipes, ensuring your croak-counter exile zone remains fully accessible.
