Converting token generation into instant-speed board control while creating an ever-growing army of green rodents defines one of the most explosive Golgari value engines. On Moxfield’s high-power and Tokens/Aristocrats charts, Chatterfang, Squirrel General stands out as one of the premier commanders in the Golgari () color pair.
Why Chatterfang Commands the Golgari Meta
As a 3/3 Squirrel Warrior legend costing three mana (), Chatterfang, Squirrel General features Forestwalk and a passive ability that spawns a 1/1 green Squirrel creature token whenever you create one or more tokens of any kind. Additionally, by paying a single black mana () and sacrificing X Squirrels, Chatterfang gives a target creature +X/-X until end of turn. By turning every Treasure, Food, Clue, or Creature token into extra bodies, Chatterfang controls opposing boards without casting a single removal spell.
Here is the strategic operational blueprint of Moxfield’s premier Chatterfang list, detailing how to turn token loops into total board dominance.
1. Core Mechanics & Strategic Phases
Succeeding with Chatterfang requires fast token producers, token doublers, low-cost sacrifice engines, and death-trigger payoffs across Golgari colors.
-
Early Game (Turns 1–2): Cast Turn 1 mana dorks like Birds of Paradise or Llanowar Elves alongside efficient token generators like Young Wolf or Haywire Mite.
-
Mid Game (Turns 3–4): Deploy Chatterfang, Squirrel General and begin multiplying token generation with engine pieces like Pitiless Plunderer or Warren Soultrader to build a massive Squirrel army while keeping opposing commanders off the board.
-
Late Game (Turns 5+): Execute infinite sacrifice loops with Pitiless Plunderer or assemble mass aristocrat drain triggers with Zulaport Cutthroat and Marionette Master to wipe out opponent life totals in a single turn.
2. Moxfield Highlights: Golgari Token & Sacrifice Engines
The highest-rated community lists on Moxfield optimize Chatterfang by balancing multi-token generators with death-trigger payoffs, counter multipliers, and infinite combo pieces.
-
Pitiless Plunderer / Warren Soultrader: Infinite combo and mana engines. Pitiless Plunderer generates a Treasure token whenever a creature dies, triggering Chatterfang to create a Squirrel. Sacrificing that Squirrel to Chatterfang’s ability creates a net-neutral or positive sacrifice loop that wipes all opposing creatures and generates infinite mana.
-
Academy Manufactor / Doubling Season: Token multipliers. Academy Manufactor turns any single Clue, Food, or Treasure creation event into all three, causing Chatterfang to spawn three Squirrels instantly. Combined with Doubling Season, your token production scales exponentially.
-
Zulaport Cutthroat / Marionette Master: Direct damage finishers. Sacrificing your endless swarm of Squirrel tokens and Treasures triggers instant life drain across all opponents, closing out games through board wipes or active sacrifice loops.
-
Earthcraft / Squirrel Nest: Two-card win condition. Enchanting a basic land with Squirrel Nest and tapping it creates a Squirrel, which can immediately be tapped via Earthcraft to untap the land, generating infinite Squirrel tokens on demand.
