Converting every combat phase into a board-wide stat advantage and continuous opposing creature suppression makes Bolg, Erebor’s Reckoning from The Hobbit Commander (HOC) a brutal Rakdos commander in Magic: The Gathering.
As a 6/6 Goblin Soldier with Trample costing six mana (), Bolg triggers at the beginning of each combat step, granting other Goblins and Orcs you control +2/+2 while giving all creatures your opponents control -1/-1 until end of turn. Because this triggers on every player’s combat, Bolg systematically wipes small enemy utility creatures and token armies while leaving your aggressive Goblin and Orc swarm pumped for massive combat swings and blocking duties.
Here is the strategic operational blueprint of Moxfield’s premier Bolg, Erebor’s Reckoning list, detailing how to swarm low-cost Goblins and Orcs, weaponize per-combat triggers, and dominate table battlefields.
1. Core Mechanics & Strategic Phases
Succeeding with Bolg requires fast Rakdos mana acceleration, high-density low-cost Goblin and Orc token generators, instant-speed sacrifice outlets, and aggressive tribal lords.
-
Early Game (Turns 1–3): Accelerate mana with Sol Ring and Dark Ritual while building a wide token board with Krenko, Mob Boss, Goblin Rabblemaster, or Orcish Bowmasters.
-
Mid Game (Turns 4–5): Cast Bolg, Erebor’s Reckoning. Immediately trigger his combat ability to shrink opposing boards by -1/-1 and buff your attacking army by +2/+2.
-
Late Game (Turns 5+): Maintain continuous combat pressure on both your turn and opponents‘ turns, or sacrifice your pumped Goblins to Goblin Bombardment and Phyrexian Altar to drain remaining player life totals.
