Sacrificing 2-power token fodder to double your first instant or sorcery spell each turn converts standard Grixis spellslinging into a multi-copy value powerhouse. On Moxfield’s high-power Grixis charts, Anhelo, the Painter from Streets of New Capenna Commander stands out as a unique sacrifice-spellslinger hybrid capable of duplicating game-ending spells for virtually zero additional mana investment.
As a 1/3 Vampire Assassin legend with Deathtouch costing three mana (), Anhelo grants Casualty 2 to the first instant or sorcery spell you cast each turn. By sacrificing a creature with power 2 or greater upon casting, you copy that spell entirely. By pairing cheap token generators like Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia or Poppet Stitcher with high-impact instants and sorceries like Time Warp or Demonic Tutor, Anhelo double-casts win conditions effortlessly.
Here is the strategic operational blueprint of Moxfield’s premier Anhelo list, detailing how to generate Casualty fodder, duplicate high-value spells, and execute lethal Grixis spell-copy loops.
1. Core Mechanics & Strategic Phases
Succeeding with Anhelo requires consistent 2-power token generation, low-cost spell triggers, high-value Casualty payloads, and Grixis protection.
-
Early Game (Turns 1–2): Lay down recurring 2-power token engines like Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia or Bitterblossom alongside fast Grixis mana rocks.
-
Mid Game (Turns 3–4): Cast Anhelo. Use Casualty 2 to sacrifice a token and duplicate card draw or removal spells like Frantic Search, Expressive Iteration, or Demonic Tutor.
-
Late Game (Turns 4+): Duplicate massive spells like Time Warp, Expropriate, or Peer into the Abyss. Draw dozens of cards, take extra turns, and finish the game with Thassa’s Oracle or Torment of Hailfire.
2. Moxfield Highlights: Token Engines & Doubled Payoffs
The highest-rated community lists on Moxfield optimize Anhelo by balancing self-sustaining 2-power creature generators with high-impact instant and sorcery spells.
Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia / Poppet Stitcher / Sedgemoor Witch
The premier Casualty fuel engines. Jadar creates a 2/2 Decayed Zombie every end step, while Poppet Stitcher and Sedgemoor Witch reward every spell cast with 2-power token fodder.
Time Warp / Expropriate
Extra turn multipliers. Cascading or paying Casualty 2 on an extra turn spell yields two extra turns for the price of one, functionally sealing the game in your favor.
Demonic Tutor / Solve the Equation
Double tutors. Casualty 2 on a tutor spell allows you to fetch both halves of a game-winning combo (such as Thassa’s Oracle + Demonic Consultation) in a single spell resolution.
Fierce Guardianship / Deflecting Swat
Free Grixis protection suite. Keeps Anhelo alive on the battlefield so your Casualty triggers remain active during crucial combo turns.
