The white-hot fury of the Sylex Blast did not just end a war – it broke the sky, shattered the tectonic plates, and froze an entire world in time. This is the story of Dominaria’s darkest millennium and the ancient Planeswalkers who tried to pick up the pieces.

The Great Freeze: Dominaria After the Blast

When Urza triggered the Golgothian Sylex on the island of Argoth, the immediate consequence was total annihilation. But the secondary effect was a slow, agonizing planetary suffocation known as The Ice Age.

The colossal amount of debris, soot, and ash hurled into the stratosphere blocked out the sun entirely. Temperatures plummeted globally within a matter of weeks. Lush green valleys, industrial foundries, and ancient battlefields alike were buried beneath meters of hard-packed glacial ice. The vast oceans froze over, and civilization as the Thran descendants knew it collapsed into a desperate struggle for mere survival.

For over a millennium, humanity and the surviving humanoid races regressed into primitive tribal societies. They huddled around geothermal vents, fought off savage monsters adapted to the cold, and passed down fragmented, mythologized tales of two „god-brothers“ who had broken the world in their wrath. Nations vanished, languages morphed, and history dissolved into legend.

Yet, life found a way to endure. New kingdoms slowly carved out frozen redoubts, such as the proud glacial empire of Kjeldor and the fierce, nomadic tribes of Balduvia. Unbeknownst to them, while mortals froze on the surface, the true architects of the Multiverse were watching, plotting, and fighting a shadow war across the planes.

The Ascension of the First Planeswalkers

Before the Mending changed the nature of the Multiverse forever, Planeswalkers were literal, omnipotent gods. They could reshape continents with a thought, travel instantly between dimensions, and live for millennia untouched by disease or aging. The Sylex Blast had thrust Urza into this pantheon, but he was far from alone.

During and immediately following the Ice Age, several legendary figures awakened their spark, each shaping the fate of Dominaria and beyond:

  • Teferi: A brilliant, witty, and deeply philosophical young mage from the continent of Zhalfir. Teferi discovered his spark early and became fascinated by the manipulation of time itself. While other Planeswalkers meddled in cosmic wars, Teferi often preferred experimenting with temporal phasing, sometimes accidentally trapping entire islands or mage-schools outside of time.

  • Lord Windgrace: A majestic, feline Planeswalker deeply bound to the soul of Urborg and the natural world of Dominaria. Windgrace viewed the mechanical horrors of Phyrexia and the reckless hubris of mortal artificers as an affront to nature, serving as an ancient, stoic guardian of the land.

  • Freyalise: An elvish druid of immense power who became a champion of green life during the freezing dark age. She would eventually sacrifice immense energy to heal parts of Dominaria’s shattered biosphere, earning the reverence of generations of elves.

  • Bo Levar and Daria: Navigators and freedom fighters who realized that the Multiverse was far larger than any single frozen world, working behind the scenes to protect developing civilizations.

Urza’s Long Exile and Obsession

While other Planeswalkers pursued their own agendas, Urza spent centuries undergoing a profound, terrifying transformation. The mortal man who wept for Mishra was gone. In his place stood a cold, immortal machine-god whose mind operated on a cosmic, centuries-long scale.

Hovering outside of mortal comprehension, Urza surveyed the damage he had caused. More importantly, he realized a horrifying truth: the Sylex blast had not destroyed Phyrexia. It had only delayed it. Deep beneath the surface of Dominaria, in the Caves of Koilos, and across the dark dimensions of the Multiverse, Yawgmoth’s biomechanical empire was rebuilding, mutating, and waiting for the ice to melt.

Urza’s obsession turned entirely toward retaliation and preparation. He realized that conventional magic or human armies could never defeat a multiversal machine god. To beat Phyrexia, he needed to engineer a weapon of unimaginable complexity – a project that would take thousands of years, multiple generations of bloodlines, and the systematic manipulation of history itself.

He began creating secret artifacts, breeding bloodlines of humans with specific magical traits (known later as the Bloodlines Project), and constructing a sentient flying vessel powered by artificial intelligence and ancient magic, the legendary Weatherlight.

The Power Struggles of the Frozen Age

While Urza schemed in the background, the surface of Dominaria was far from peaceful. The Ice Age was defined by brutal conflicts over dwindling resources.

The kingdoms of Kjeldor and Balduvia fought bloody, senseless wars born of starvation, manipulated in the shadows by dark wizards and lingering artifacts of the past. The most terrifying of these threats was Lim-Dûl, a powerful necromancer who harnessed the residual dark magic of the ruined ages to raise vast armies of the undead, threatening to conquer what little civilization remained.

It took the combined intervention of mortal heroes like the legendary knight Darien and powerful mages to finally break Lim-Dûl’s grip—though the necromancer’s legacy and cursed artifacts would ripple through history for generations.

Why Chapter 2 Sets the Stage for Total War

The Ice Age was more than just a millennium of snow and ice; it was the calm before the multiversal storm.

While mortals learned how to survive in the cold, Urza spent every waking century assembling the pieces of his grand design. He was playing a multi-millennial game of chess against Yawgmoth, unaware that the mechanical horror was already spreading its roots across the dark corners of the Multiverse. The ice was starting to melt, and the true nightmare was about to awaken.
