Wretched Ranks is arguably the strongest starting point in the Foundations Commander lineup, and the reason is simple: the mono-black Zombie deck already contains many of the cards an experienced player would normally recommend adding. Led by Ghoulcaller Gisa, it combines Zombie tribal, sacrifice synergies and graveyard recursion into a strategy that can overwhelm opponents without needing an expensive rebuild.

The stock list includes Gravecrawler, Cryptbreaker, Death Baron, Diregraf Colossus, Headless Rider and Graveborn Muse. These aren’t filler cards. They’re the foundation of a legitimate Zombie Commander deck, and replacing them would make little sense.

The best Wretched Ranks upgrades focus on what Gisa does differently. She can sacrifice a single large creature to create an entire army of Zombies, turning high-power creatures into enormous battlefield advantages. With the right supporting cards, those Zombies can become attackers, card draw, mana or sacrifice fodder that strips opponents of their own creatures.

Our first recommendations are Rotting Regisaur, Jet Medallion and Grave Pact. Each improves a different part of the deck without dismantling its already impressive tribal core. Here’s what we’d buy first, what we’d remove and how to make Ghoulcaller Gisa considerably more dangerous.

Best Wretched Ranks Upgrades at a Glance

You don’t need to rebuild all 100 cards to make Wretched Ranks stronger. A handful of carefully chosen additions can improve its speed, consistency and ability to turn Zombie tokens into meaningful advantages.

Card Main Benefit Priority
Rotting Regisaur Seven Zombies from one sacrifice Essential
Jet Medallion Cheaper black spells High
Relentless Dead Zombie recursion High
Grave Pact Repeated creature control High
Ashnod’s Altar Converts Zombies into mana High
Victimize Efficient creature recursion Budget
Liliana, Dreadhorde General Card draw and death triggers Premium
Three Tree City Explosive tribal mana Premium

If you only make three changes, I’d start with Rotting Regisaur, Jet Medallion and an efficient sacrifice payoff. This gives Gisa a powerful creature to sacrifice, helps cast your spells more efficiently and makes sacrificing creatures valuable beyond simply creating more Zombies.

The ideal upgrade package depends on your playgroup. Casual Zombie tribal decks may prefer more recursion and combat pressure, while higher-powered builds can lean into sacrifice outlets, token engines and resource denial.

How Ghoulcaller Gisa Turns One Creature into an Army

Ghoulcaller Gisa costs and enters as a 3/4 Human Wizard. Her activated ability costs , and the sacrifice of another creature. In exchange, she creates X 2/2 black Zombie creature tokens, where X is the sacrificed creature’s power.

That single ability gives Wretched Ranks a very different identity from conventional Zombie tribal decks. Rather than simply casting more Zombies, Gisa rewards you for finding creatures with unusually high power and converting them into a much larger battlefield.

Sacrificing a six-power creature creates six Zombies, representing twelve total power distributed across six separate bodies. A seven-power creature becomes seven Zombies, and a creature with ten power suddenly produces twenty total power worth of tokens.

That conversion becomes even stronger when the deck already contains Zombie lords. Death Baron, Lord of the Accursed and Undead Warchief can turn a modest collection of 2/2 tokens into a genuinely threatening army.

Gisa also doesn’t require the sacrificed creature to be a Zombie. This gives the deck freedom to include a few high-power creatures specifically because they generate an exceptional number of tokens.

The stock Soulless One is particularly impressive. Its power and toughness scale with the number of Zombies on the battlefield and Zombie cards in graveyards. Once your battlefield is developed, sacrificing Soulless One can create another enormous wave of creatures.

The most important lesson is that Gisa doesn’t need more expensive spells that create a few Zombies. She already produces tokens efficiently. What she needs is a reliable supply of creatures worth sacrificing and ways to profit from the Zombies afterward.

Best Creature Upgrades for Wretched Ranks

Rotting Regisaur – The Best Gisa Sacrifice Target

Rotting Regisaur is our favorite upgrade because it does exactly what Gisa wants at an extremely efficient rate.

For only , you get a 7/6 Zombie Dinosaur. Its drawback forces you to discard a card at the beginning of your upkeep, but Gisa offers an alternative to keeping it around indefinitely.

Once your commander is available, you can sacrifice Rotting Regisaur to create seven 2/2 Zombie tokens. That’s fourteen total power generated from a creature that originally cost only three mana.

The creature’s Zombie typing is another advantage. Before being sacrificed, Regisaur benefits from existing tribal payoffs such as Death Baron and Undead Warchief. With additional power from those effects, it can produce even more Zombies.

This is the kind of synergy that makes an upgrade feel genuinely transformative rather than simply adding another strong black card.

Our recommendation: Add Rotting Regisaur first. It’s one of the clearest examples of a card becoming substantially better because of the specific commander you’re playing.

Relentless Dead – Keep the Graveyard Engine Running

Relentless Dead doesn’t produce enormous numbers of Zombies by itself, but it makes the deck considerably more resilient.

When it dies, you can pay to return it to your hand. Its second death trigger allows you to pay to return another Zombie creature card with mana value X from your graveyard to the battlefield.

That combination creates repeatable value in a deck already filled with creatures that benefit from entering, leaving or returning from the graveyard.

Gravecrawler, Headless Rider and Undead Augur are all part of the original list and naturally complement this approach.

Relentless Dead is particularly useful after removal-heavy games, where rebuilding a battlefield can otherwise consume several turns.

Liliana, Dreadhorde General – A Premium Value Engine

Liliana, Dreadhorde General gives the deck another powerful way to profit from creatures dying.

Whenever a creature you control dies, her static ability lets you draw a card. That includes creature tokens, making Liliana especially effective in a deck that can produce large numbers of disposable Zombies.

Gisa can turn one creature into seven Zombies, while an additional sacrifice outlet can later convert those tokens into more cards. Liliana’s own abilities also support the strategy by creating Zombie tokens and forcing sacrifices.

The drawback is her six-mana cost. Wretched Ranks already has several expensive cards, so Liliana is best considered a premium upgrade rather than an essential starting purchase.

Our recommendation: Add her once you’ve improved the deck’s early development and can reliably reach the later stages of the game.

Best Sacrifice Upgrades: Make Every Zombie Matter

Creating ten or twenty Zombie tokens is impressive, but the battlefield can still become stalled. Opponents may develop blockers, cast board wipes or create larger armies of their own.

The best Wretched Ranks upgrades give those tokens another purpose.

Grave Pact – Turn Sacrifice into Removal

Grave Pact is one of the most powerful additions available for a sacrifice-focused Ghoulcaller Gisa deck.

Whenever a creature you control dies, each other player sacrifices a creature. This means activating Gisa doesn’t just create Zombies. It can also force every opponent to sacrifice a creature as part of the same sequence.

With additional sacrifice outlets, the effect becomes even more oppressive. Every disposable Zombie can potentially represent another creature each opponent must sacrifice.

That makes Grave Pact extremely effective against creature-heavy Commander decks, although some playgroups may find repeatable sacrifice-lock strategies frustrating.

If your goal is a relaxed tribal deck, you may prefer a less controlling approach. For players who specifically enjoy aristocrats and resource denial, however, Grave Pact is among the most impactful improvements.

Ashnod’s Altar – Convert Zombies into Mana

Ashnod’s Altar allows you to sacrifice a creature to generate two colorless mana.

With Gisa, that creates a straightforward resource engine. A sacrificed Rotting Regisaur can produce seven Zombies, and those tokens can later be sacrificed to Ashnod’s Altar for a substantial burst of mana.

This gives the deck an alternative way to cast expensive spells and recover resources when combat isn’t immediately favorable.

Ashnod’s Altar also works with the existing death-trigger package. Undead Augur can turn dying Zombies into cards, while Headless Rider replaces dying nontoken Zombies with additional tokens.

It’s one of the strongest additions for players who want the deck to do more than simply attack.

Phyrexian Altar – The Premium Alternative

Phyrexian Altar provides a similar sacrifice outlet, producing one mana of any color whenever you sacrifice a creature.

Mono-black doesn’t need the color fixing, but turning expendable Zombies into black mana can support powerful turns involving creature recursion and repeated spells.

The card is especially attractive in higher-budget builds focused on loops involving Gravecrawler and other recurring creatures.

However, it’s not necessary for a casual upgrade. Ashnod’s Altar is already an excellent tool, and improving the rest of the deck may provide more value than immediately purchasing another expensive sacrifice outlet.

What Cards Should You Cut From Wretched Ranks?

Wretched Ranks already has a strong tribal foundation, so the goal isn’t to remove cards simply because they came in a precon. Instead, I’d prioritize cutting slower effects that contribute less to Gisa’s main strategy.

These are the first swaps I’d consider.

Remove Add Reason
Commander’s Sphere Jet Medallion More efficient cost reduction
Moan of the Unhallowed Rotting Regisaur Far stronger token production with Gisa
Marchesa’s Decree Grave Pact Direct sacrifice synergy
Cemetery Recruitment Victimize More powerful creature recursion
Infernal Idol Ashnod’s Altar Scalable mana generation

These swaps are designed to sharpen the existing game plan rather than completely change the deck. You can make them gradually, beginning with the additions that fit your budget.

Commander’s Sphere is useful in many Commander precons, but Wretched Ranks already contains Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone and other mana support. Once Jet Medallion is available, the three-mana rock becomes a relatively easy cut.

Moan of the Unhallowed is thematically appropriate but inefficient compared with Gisa’s own token production. Spending four mana for two Zombies is difficult to justify when one efficient sacrifice target can generate considerably more.

Marchesa’s Decree can protect you from attacks and provides access to the monarch, but it doesn’t directly strengthen the sacrifice engine. Grave Pact fits that strategy much more closely, though you may prefer keeping Marchesa’s Decree in aggressive playgroups.

I would also consider removing Infernal Idol once the deck has access to better acceleration. Its mana production is relatively expensive, while Ashnod’s Altar can turn your own creatures into a much larger resource engine.

The cards I wouldn’t cut are the inexpensive Zombie infrastructure. Cryptbreaker, Carrion Feeder, Champion of the Perished and Gravecrawler are exactly what the deck needs to function before Gisa arrives.

Budget vs. Premium Wretched Ranks Upgrades

The good news is that Wretched Ranks doesn’t require an enormous investment. The original list already contains many of the Zombie staples that would normally consume a substantial part of your upgrade budget.

Budget Upgrade Path

For a smaller budget, focus on improving token generation, recursion and the ability to use creatures as resources.

Rotting Regisaur is the first card I’d consider, provided its current market price fits your budget. Few creatures offer such a clean combination of high power and low mana cost.

Victimize is another useful addition. Sacrificing one creature to return two creature cards from your graveyard tapped can create an excellent value exchange, particularly when the sacrificed creature already has a death trigger.

Village Rites offers an inexpensive way to turn a creature into two cards, while Feed the Swarm provides interaction with troublesome creatures or enchantments.

The best budget improvements aren’t necessarily flashy. They help the deck play Magic more consistently, recover after interaction and turn Gisa’s tokens into resources.

I’d begin with three to five inexpensive upgrades, play several games and then decide whether more expensive cards would solve meaningful problems.

Premium Upgrade Path

At a higher budget, Wretched Ranks can become an impressive mono-black sacrifice engine.

Grave Pact makes every sacrifice more threatening, while Liliana, Dreadhorde General turns creature deaths into additional cards.

Phyrexian Altar provides another way to convert expendable Zombies into mana, and Three Tree City can produce exceptional amounts of mana once you’ve developed a large Zombie battlefield.

For even more explosive potential, Phyrexian Tower gives the deck a repeatable sacrifice outlet directly from its mana base.

These upgrades are powerful, but they also change how the deck feels. A casual Zombie tribal list gradually becomes more focused on sacrifice engines, recurring creatures and resource control.

Choose the version that matches your playgroup rather than assuming that the most expensive collection of cards must be the most enjoyable.

Keep These Zombie Staples From the Original Precon

One of the easiest mistakes when upgrading Wretched Ranks is recommending cards that are already included in the stock deck.

Diregraf Colossus becomes stronger as Zombie cards accumulate in your graveyard and creates additional tokens whenever you cast Zombie spells. Headless Rider replaces dying nontoken Zombies with new 2/2 Zombie tokens, giving the deck natural resilience.

Undead Augur provides card draw whenever Zombies you control die, while Midnight Reaper rewards the deaths of your nontoken creatures. These effects give sacrifice outlets a second purpose beyond simply removing creatures from your battlefield.

The Zombie lords also deserve their places. Death Baron grants other Zombies additional power and deathtouch, Lord of the Accursed provides another anthem and access to menace, while Undead Warchief makes Zombie spells cheaper and your army considerably more threatening.

At the top of the curve, Grave Titan generates additional Zombies as it enters and attacks. Its six power also makes it a legitimate Gisa sacrifice target after it has already provided value.

Gray Merchant of Asphodel gives Wretched Ranks a different way to close games, draining opponents based on your devotion to black. That makes it particularly valuable when opponents have enough blockers to stop a conventional Zombie attack.

The deck’s existing combination of token production, creature recursion and sacrifice rewards is already strong. Your upgrades should enhance those connections rather than replace the entire foundation.

How to Improve the Mono-Black Mana Base

Wretched Ranks benefits from one of the simplest mana bases in Commander. Its original list uses 33 Swamp cards alongside useful lands such as Bojuka Bog, Castle Locthwain, Memorial to Folly and Witch’s Cottage.

Most of these utility lands are worth keeping.

Castle Locthwain provides additional card draw when your hand runs low, while Bojuka Bog offers graveyard interaction without occupying a dedicated spell slot. Witch’s Cottage can help recover a creature from your graveyard when its conditions are met.

The most interesting upgrade is Three Tree City. By choosing Zombie as the creature type, it can produce enormous amounts of mana when Gisa has created a substantial token army.

Phyrexian Tower is another premium option, allowing you to sacrifice a creature for . That makes it useful both as acceleration and as a way to trigger your sacrifice payoffs.

However, there’s no need to fill the mana base with expensive utility lands. The stock deck contains effects such as Mutilate, Tendrils of Corruption and Consuming Corruption that benefit from having Swamps.

For a budget version, I’d keep the existing mana base largely intact. For a premium build, add one or two highly synergistic lands without weakening your ability to cast black spells consistently.

How the Upgraded Wretched Ranks Deck Wins

The ideal game starts with inexpensive Zombie creatures and a few sources of card advantage. Champion of the Perished, Cryptbreaker and Gravecrawler help establish an early battlefield while your tribal payoffs gradually make every creature more valuable.

By the time Gisa arrives, you want at least one creature worth sacrificing. Rotting Regisaur is an excellent example, but even a large Soulless One can produce an enormous army.

Once those tokens exist, the deck can win in several ways. Tribal lords turn them into powerful attackers, sacrifice outlets convert them into additional resources and death-trigger effects make removing your creatures increasingly unattractive.

Grave Pact adds a particularly threatening dimension. Opponents can no longer rely on developing their own creatures if every sacrifice you make forces them to sacrifice something as well.

Meanwhile, Undead Augur and Liliana, Dreadhorde General can turn creature deaths into more cards, helping you maintain pressure even through removal.

The deck can also finish games without conventional combat. Gray Merchant of Asphodel provides a powerful life-drain effect, especially when you already control several black permanents.

The strongest version of Wretched Ranks isn’t necessarily the one with the most Zombies. It’s the one that can turn its Zombies into whatever resource is most valuable at that moment.

Is Wretched Ranks Worth Buying or Upgrading?

For someone who wants to build Zombie tribal, Wretched Ranks is one of the most attractive starting points in the Foundations Commander lineup.

The original deck already includes a substantial collection of reusable staples, including Gravecrawler, Death Baron, Undead Warchief, Lord of the Undead, Grave Titan and Phyrexian Arena.

That makes the sealed product particularly appealing to players who don’t already own an extensive Zombie collection.

However, the best deal depends on the current purchase price. A deck containing valuable reprints isn’t automatically a bargain if its sealed price already reflects those cards.

For a player who owns most of the Zombie staples, buying individual upgrades may be more economical than purchasing the precon. For someone starting from scratch, the convenience of a complete, playable Commander deck provides value beyond the individual card prices.

PreconForge Verdict: The Best Ghoulcaller Gisa Upgrades

Wretched Ranks doesn’t need a complete rebuild. Its original Zombie core is already strong enough to support several different Commander strategies, from straightforward tribal combat to sacrifice-heavy aristocrats.

The best upgrades make Ghoulcaller Gisa more effective rather than simply adding more expensive Zombies.

Our first addition would be Rotting Regisaur, which provides an exceptionally efficient sacrifice target. Jet Medallion makes the mono-black shell faster, while Grave Pact gives the sacrifice engine a powerful way to control opposing creatures.

Relentless Dead and Victimize strengthen recursion, while Ashnod’s Altar turns disposable Zombie tokens into resources. Higher-budget lists can consider Liliana, Dreadhorde General, Three Tree City and Phyrexian Altar for even greater long-term potential.

The most important lesson is to preserve the excellent cards already in the box. Wretched Ranks contains enough Zombie lords, recursion pieces and death-trigger rewards that relatively small upgrades can make a noticeable difference.

Our final recommendation: Start with Rotting Regisaur and Jet Medallion, add a sacrifice outlet that suits your budget and only invest in premium engines once the deck already plays consistently.
