Fusing spellcasting triggers with creature sacrifice engines allows Extus, Oriq Overlord (and its Modal Double-Faced card back, Awaken the Blood Avatar) from Strixhaven: School of Mages to dominate high-power Mardu tables through relentless token sacrifice and recursion.
Extus side is a 2/4 Double Strike Human Warlock () whose Magecraft ability returns creature cards from your graveyard to your hand whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery. However, the true commander payoff often lies on the reverse side: Awaken the Blood Avatar, an sorcery discounted by for each sacrificed creature. By sacrificing disposable token fodder generated by instant/sorcery spells, you repeatedly cast the Avatar side for as little as , forcing opponents to sacrifice creatures while spawning lethal 3/6 Haste Blood Avatar tokens.
Here is the strategic operational blueprint of Moxfield’s premier Extus list, detailing how to generate fodder, reduce commander costs, and loop sacrifice spells for total board dominance.
1. Core Mechanics & Strategic Phases
Succeeding with Extus requires instant/sorcery token generators, low-cost sacrifice spells, Magecraft recursion, and aristocrat ping damage.
-
Early Game (Turns 1–2): Set up token-generating engines like Young Pyromancer, Sedgemoor Witch, and Monastery Mentor alongside fast Mardu mana rocks.
-
Mid Game (Turns 3–4): Cast low-cost instants and sorceries to build a token army. Sacrifice 3 tokens to cast Awaken the Blood Avatar from the Command Zone for just two mana ().
-
Late Game (Turns 4+): Loop sacrifice triggers with Extus on the field to recur powerful utility creatures like Dockside Extortionist or Grand Abolisher, overwhelming opponent boards with multiple 3/6 haste Blood Avatars.
2. Moxfield Highlights: Token Generators & Sacrifice Payoffs
The highest-rated community lists on Moxfield optimize Extus by maximizing cheap token generation from instant/sorcery spells to ensure discounted casts of Awaken the Blood Avatar.
Young Pyromancer / Sedgemoor Witch / Monastery Mentor
The premier token generation engine. Every instant or sorcery spell cast creates 1/1 tokens or 1/1 Pests with ward, providing endless sacrifice fodder for Awaken the Blood Avatar.
Dockside Extortionist / Orcish Bowmasters
High-value creature recursion targets. When Extus is on the battlefield, casting instant spells retrieves these sacrificed high-impact creatures back from your graveyard directly to your hand.
Fury Storm / Dualcaster Mage
Spell duplication stack. Since Awaken the Blood Avatar is cast repeatedly from the Command Zone, Fury Storm copies it multiple times based on commander cast count, wiping opposing creature boards instantly.
Deflecting Swat / Flawless Maneuver / Boros Charm
Free Mardu protection suite. Keeps your key token generators and Extus protected while fueling Magecraft triggers.
