Exiling cards with time counters and removing those counters rapidly through tap and untap mechanics transforms high-cost spells into immediate free-cast triggers. On Moxfield’s high-power Simic charts, Alaundo the Seer from Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate stands out as an explosive engine that turns card draw and time manipulation into game-ending board states.
As a 3/5 Human Shaman legend costing four mana (), Alaundo taps to exile a card from your hand with time counters equal to its mana value, giving it a free-cast trigger when the last counter vanishes. Crucially, every activation also removes a time counter from every exiled card you own before drawing you a card. By chaining untap enablers like Aphetto Alchemist, Intruder Alarm, or Murkfiend Liege, Alaundo strips time counters at hyper-speed, casting colossal spells for free on demand.
Here is the strategic operational blueprint of Moxfield’s premier Alaundo list, detailing how to abuse tap/untap mechanics, clear time counters, and deploy game-winning Simic combos.
1. Core Mechanics & Strategic Phases
Succeeding with Alaundo requires early mana dorks, commander haste enablers, dense untapper creatures, and massive payoff spells.
-
Early Game (Turns 1–2): Deploy fast mana dorks like Birds of Paradise or Delighted Halfling and set up untappers like Seeker of Skybreak or Kiora’s Follower.
-
Mid Game (Turns 3–4): Cast Alaundo and grant him haste using Thousand-Year Elixir or Lightning Greaves. Begin exiling cards and cycling time counters.
-
Late Game (Turns 4+): Land an Intruder Alarm or loop untappers. Free-cast creature spells automatically untap Alaundo, allowing you to draw your entire deck, clear all time counters, and execute instant wins with Thassa’s Oracle or Finale of Devastation.
2. Moxfield Highlights: Untap Chains & Free Spells
The highest-rated community lists on Moxfield optimize Alaundo by maximizing creature-based untap abilities alongside mass haste and free-cast payoffs.
Intruder Alarm / Murkfiend Liege
The ultimate untap engines. Whenever a creature spell enters off Alaundo’s time counter trigger, Intruder Alarm untaps all creatures, letting Alaundo activate again immediately to draw cards and cast the next creature.
Aphetto Alchemist / Seeker of Skybreak / Kiora’s Follower
Targeted untap squad. Taps directly to untap Alaundo, effectively doubling or tripling his time counter removal triggers per turn cycle.
Thousand-Year Elixir / Concordant Crossroads
Haste enablers. Allows Alaundo and newly free-casted tap creatures to activate their abilities the moment they touch the battlefield.
Fierce Guardianship / Heroic Intervention
Protection suite. Safeguards Alaundo from targeted removal and board wipes, preserving your exiled time-counter queue.
