Granting hyper-discounted Freerunning costs to every Assassin in your hand while possessing an instant 5-color player elimination ability turns combat damage into lethal assassinations. On Moxfield’s high-power and tribal charts, few five-color commanders deliver as much flavor and mechanical efficiency as Ezio Auditore da Firenze.
As a 3/2 Human Assassin costing two mana, Ezio features Menace. He grants Freerunning to all other Assassin spells you cast from your hand if you dealt combat damage to a player with an Assassin or opponent this turn. Furthermore, by paying five colors () when Ezio attacks a player with 10 or less life, that player is instantly eliminated from the game. By combining low-cost Assassins with 5-color mana fixing and instant execution triggers, Ezio systematically eliminates opponents one by one.
Here is the strategic operational blueprint of Moxfield’s premier Ezio list, detailing how to maximize Freerunning discounts, tribal synergies, and player executions.
1. Core Mechanics & Strategic Phases
Succeeding with Ezio requires 5-color mana fixing, low-cost evasive Assassins, high-impact tribal payoffs, and fast execution setups.
-
Early Game (Turns 1–2): Fix your 5-color mana base using fetches and shock lands while deploying Ezio on Turn 2 or early evasive Assassins like Changeling Outcast.
-
Mid Game (Turns 3–4): Attack to trigger Freerunning, cheating massive Assassins like Vein Ripper or Ramses, Assassin Lord into play for just .
-
Late Game (Turns 5+): Reduce opponent life totals below 10 using unblockable threats, attack with Ezio to activate his ability, and execute players directly regardless of their board state.
2. Moxfield Highlights: Creed of Assassins
The highest-rated community lists on Moxfield optimize Ezio by pairing high-cost Assassin payoffs with aggressive 5-color tutors, fast mana, and unblockable enablers.
Vein Ripper / Ramses, Assassin Lord
High-impact Assassin payoffs. Casting a 6-mana game-ending flyer like Vein Ripper for just two black mana () via Freerunning provides massive tempo, while Ramses grants tribal lords buffs and an alternate win condition when an opponent dies.
Kassandra, Eagle Bearer / Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad
Universes Beyond Assassin support. Kassandra fetches key equipment like The Spear of Leonidas, while Altaïr reanimates exiled Assassins as tapped and attacking tokens to flood the board with free combat triggers.
Changeling Outcast / Covert Operative
Unblockable Freerunning enablers. Guaranteeing combat damage on Turn 2 or 3 ensures that Ezio’s Freerunning discount is permanently active every turn cycle.
Thassa’s Oracle + Demonic Consultation / Tainted Pact
Compact 5-color backup line. Utilizing full 5-color access allows seamless integration of the fastest alternate win condition in Commander as a high-power backup.
